003524 After years of increasing demand from North American dealers, Mercedes-Benz created an all-new generation of V8s.
These 3.
5-liter V8s might have offered a smaller displacement than contemporary offerings from domestic manufacturers, but their sophisticated use of overhead camshafts and one of the world's first uses of electronic fuel injection meant they delivered more than satisfactory power levels.
The engines utilized many aluminum parts throughout, such as the cylinder heads, allowing the engine to offer responsive power while weighing less than many six cylinders, providing a wonderfully balanced driving characteristic.
These engines were fitted in the 300 SEL 3.
5 Sedan and the 280 SE 3.
5 Coupe and Cabriolet.
With a lavish price in excess of $12,000 when new, these cars offer the exclusivity of a limited production model, with V8 power and world-renowned Mercedes-Benz build quality.
The pinnacle of personal luxury at Mercedes-Benz during the late 1960s and early 1970s was, of course, the 3.
5 Cabriolet, often lavishly equipped with many options and offered in wonderful color schemes.
As evidenced by the accompanying Data Card, this car was ordered new in fabulous 834 Moss Green Poly over a Parchment leather interior.
Destined for California, it was optioned with Behr air conditioning, power windows, column-shifted automatic transmission, and a Becker Europa stereo with a power antenna.
The voluminous history file indicates that the 3.
5 Cabriolet was purchased by Dr.
J.
Gwynne Wilson of Daly City, California when the car was just a few years old from British Motors Corp of neighboring San Francisco.
The car was later sold to Greg Hubit of Larkspur, California, in the late 1970s, who retained the car until 1995.
The car was next purchased by a Mr.
Honda of Palos Verdes Estates, California.
The history file has several decades worth of California registration cards and smog test receipts showing only a limited number of miles were covered yearly.
Owing to a lifetime of careful and considerate owners in such a favorable climate, this 280 SE 3.
5 Cabriolet remains remarkably well-preserved with a high degree of original features.
The exterior of the car has been refinished in its original shade of Moss Green Poly, however, many areas, including the engine compartment, still retain the factory-applied paint.
The original dark green fabric folding soft top was replaced with a high-quality black replacement.
Of paramount importance to many collectors, the original surface-dyed Parchment leather interior is still present and has developed a subtle but lovely patina from decades of careful enjoyment.
Many of the original features, such as the Becker Europa Radio and Behr air conditioning unit, are still present.
The woodwork throughout the interior and brightly finished trim throughout the interior and exterior still retain a lustrous glow.
With a suburb level of documentation supporting this car, and an equally impressive level of preservation, it would be no small feat to locate another 3.
5 Cabriolet of this caliber - let alone in Moss Green Poly.
Displaying just 62,477 miles at cataloging, this 1971 280 SE 3.
5 Cabriolet stands as a wonderful time capsule representing one of the finest produced vehicles by Mercedes-Benz of the era.
